  • 1. Background
  • 2. Let’s get started
  • 3. Adding the RTSP stream
  • 4. Viewing the live feed and recording
  • 5. Finding the recordings
  • Next Steps

Before you begin

Connect your camera to your internet router:

Install OBS Studio, which is what you will be using to view and record the camera live feed:

Find out the RTSP stream link of your camera by following this guide:

Making an RTSP stream for a Wi-Fi or wired IP bird box camera

If you already know what the IP address of your camera is, then you can use the following RTSP stream format for the 3rd Gen camera, where the x's represent the IP address of the camera:

rtsp://xxx.xxx.x.xxx:554/stream0

So for example, if your camera had an IP address of 192.168.0.150, the IP address would be:

rtsp://192.168.0.150:554/stream0

1. Background

We will be using an RTSP stream link, which is a way of streaming videos over a local network connection. Unfortunately this means that if you set OBS Studio on a laptop to view the camera, then connect it to another Wi-Fi router, you won't be able to see the camera.

See these links for more information:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_Time_Streaming_Protocol

https://www.getscw.com/decoding/rtsp

Because the camera is recording directly to the computer rather than to a micro SD card inside the camera, it will not record when the computer is turned off or if the connection between camera and computer is lost.

2. Let’s get started

Open up OBS Studio, and click on the + icon, then Media Source

3. Adding the RTSP stream

Now you will be shown a window where you can rename the connection to the camera if you wish. When you are done click 'OK'.

On the next window, untick 'Local File'.

Now, paste your RTSP stream link into the 'Input' field then click 'OK'.

4. Viewing the live feed and recording

The live feed of your camera will now appear! To begin recording click 'Start Recording' at the bottom right.

5. Finding the recordings

To view your recordings, click 'File', then 'Show Recordings'. On Windows they are saved in the default Videos folder, unless changed.
